Strathcona Diversity Committee

About Us

The Strathcona County Diversity Committee is a grass roots organization whose goal is strengthening our community by embracing our rich diversity.

The committee is made up of individuals from many backgrounds who strongly believe in ‘Unity in Diversity’. The committee’s main objectives are:

  • To share, encourage, and celebrate diversity in Strathcona County
  • To identify and work through challenges faced by newcomers
  • To promote safety and inclusion for all people

We welcome the support and participation of all who are interested in improving Strathcona County by supporting, promoting and embracing diversity.

“Diversity is about the individual…. Inclusion is about the collective…. Diversity and inclusion is about capturing the uniqueness of the individual; creating an environment that values and respects individuals for their talent, skills and abilities…” – Canadian Centre for Diversity & Inclusion

Our Work

We have worked with Strathcona County Family and Community Services on events such as Neighbour Day and the Unity Project and collaborated with the Arts and Culture Council of Strathcona County on the annual Heritage and Culture Days. Our Blanket Exercise events and World Religion Day meet up successfully brought together community members from all walks of life, backgrounds and ages to learn about our neighbours and to forge new relationships. In March of 2019 our event to show support to our Muslim friends and neighbours as they coped with the shock of the mass shootings at mosques in New Zealand brought over 150 people together at the Masjid in the Park.

The Strathcona County Diversity Committee has presented to the Strathcona County Council and discussed areas of mutual interest. The Committee looks forward to working with the Strathcona County Council and County Departments as the County creates its Coalition of Canadian Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination (CCMARD) action plan.
